![]() ![]() Topical natural sounds may also be used in educational applications. For example, an exhibition may be enhanced with topical ambient sound of water, birds, train or machine noise. This applies mainly to cinema narratives, for example the speech of the characters of a film, but may also be applied to plays performed in a theatre, to a conference, or to integrate voice-based comments in an archeological site or monument. The narrative space is also a content that can be enhanced through multichannel techniques. In terms of music content for example, a live performance may use multichannel techniques in the context of an open-air concert, of a musical theatre performance or for broadcasting for a film, specific techniques are adapted to movie theater or to home (e.g., home cinema systems). Multichannel audio techniques may be used to reproduce contents as varied as music, speech, natural or synthetic sounds for cinema, television, broadcasting, or computers. Though cinema and soundtracks represent the major uses of surround techniques, its scope of application is broader than that, as surround sound permits creation of an audio-environment for all sorts of purposes. The most common surround sound specification, the ITU's 5.1 standard, calls for 6 speakers: Center (C), in front of the listener Left (L) and Right (R), at angles of 60° Left Surround (LS) and Right Surround (RS) at angles of 100–120° and a subwoofer, whose position is not critical. Surround sound formats vary in reproduction and recording methods, along with the number and positioning of additional channels. Surround sound typically has a listener location ( sweet spot) where the audio effects work best and presents a fixed or forward perspective of the sound field to the listener at this location. This is achieved by using multiple discrete audio channels routed to an array of loudspeakers. The technique enhances the perception of sound spatialization by exploiting sound localization: a listener's ability to identify the location or origin of a detected sound in direction and distance. ![]() Surround sound adds one or more channels from loudspeakers to the side or behind the listener that are able to create the sensation of sound coming from any horizontal direction (at ground level) around the listener. Prior to surround sound, theater sound systems commonly had three screen channels of sound that played from three loudspeakers (left, center, and right) located in front of the audience. Its first application was in movie theaters. Surround sound is a technique for enriching the fidelity and depth of sound reproduction by using multiple audio channels from speakers that surround the listener ( surround channels). ![]() ![]() ![]() In a period of rising prices, frozen may have yet another advantage over fresh. Through the first three-quarters of 2021, the United States experienced inflation in food prices that is expected to continue in the near term. And price may be on consumers’ minds more than normal. ![]() Price is still king-nine in 10 consumers report that price is again the most important purchase driver for fresh. ![]() Frozen food almost universally comes packaged but, based on these results, that doesn’t appear to factor against it much. Keeping the food from going to waste seems more important than waste caused by packaging, a case of perishability trumping sustainability. Why might this be? A similar six in 10 believe fresh food that is in packaging will stay fresh longer than fresh food without packaging. Six in 10 consumers prefer their fresh food to be in packaging even though it is arguably not needed in many cases. The food itself isn’t the only kind of waste tied to perishability. 7 On the whole, consumers are now more invested in frozen. Their capacity to store frozen food grew through the pandemic, with 30% of consumers expanding their freezer capacity. Three in four consumers in our survey said storing frozen food is convenient. In fact, consumers’ ability to stock up on frozen between less frequent shopping trips-without creating spoilage and waste-is a major feature. While it does happen, frozen spoilage doesn’t occupy the consumer’s imagination like fresh’s overripe avocados or funky fish. It appears that new shopping habits are enduring even as consumers feel less stressed about shopping in stores (only 40% indicate shopping is more stressful vs. While it has since made a partial recovery, the frequent fresh shopper group remains significantly smaller than it was before the pandemic (down 8 percentage points from 2019), whereas the group that shops the least frequently went 12 percentage points over 2019. Last year’s future of fresh report showed a 50% drop in the most frequent shopper group from 2019 to 2020. Consumers can’t stock up on fresh food and expect it to be edible weeks later, if that much time is going to pass between shopping trips. And consumers are not as tolerant of perishability now as they were before the pandemic. Perishabilityįresh food, by definition, is perishable. Analysis of data from our 2021 consumer survey reveals the top three reasons why frozen’s star may be rising among consumers: perishability, price, and preference. But the reason why consumer spending is shifting matters in terms of where new opportunities may lie and how food companies should invest. Grocers generate sales no matter how the mix of fresh and frozen shifts and many fresh food suppliers, one way or another, sell their product as part of a frozen offering too. Fresh versus frozen isn’t a true “fixed pie” or win/lose competition. ![]() ![]() Use it to obtain rare items more easily than in regular play. ![]() The Ring Ring Land mini-game is included in all language versions. The HD Remaster includes an autosave function, as well as the ability to save any time from the options menu (excludes certain in-game locations).Encounters with enemies can be turned off, making it easy to explore dungeon areas.View illustrations and artwork from the time of the original release through Gallery Mode and listen to the game’s soundtrack any time you like from the options menu via Music Mode. Let’s dive in and see how these function in The Secret Garden! Plot Points in The Secret Garden Stasis (e) Climax-does the protagonist succeed, or do they fail while learning something important? (d) Rising action-what stands in the protagonist’s way? ![]() (c) Point of no return-the event that ensures the protagonist can never go back to the way their life was before the novel opened. (b) Inciting incident-what sets the story in motion? (a) Stasis or status quo-what’s normal life like for the protagonist? You probably are somewhat familiar with the common plot points found in most novels. Let’s break down the novel further and delve into its plot points. ![]() Near the middle of the book, the garden takes on even more emotional significance, as it is used to help restore the health of her cousin Colin, the mysterious child she heard crying in the night. In this case, finding and restoring the garden gives lonely Mary something to care about, and as she works toward this goal, she becomes less spoiled, more independent, and much kinder. It has to matter to the protagonist and be part of how they are changed as a result of the events of the novel. Mary’s main goal then becomes “find this secret garden.” She does end up finding the garden about halfway through the novel, at which point, the goal shifts slightly to become “bring the garden back to life.”Īnother tricky aspect of finding our novel’s main goal is ensuring that this goal is not arbitrary or random. But in this case, the goal is pretty clear: when Mary first arrives at her mysterious new home, she learns about a secret garden, one that has been locked up and the key hidden ever since its owner’s death over a decade earlier. This can be difficult to put our finger on, as characters often have many goals along the way, as well as deeper psychological and emotional needs, which we will get to in a bit. Probably the most important (and difficult) part of writing any novel is figuring out what the protagonist’s main goal will be. When Mary’s parents die and she is sent to live with her uncle, she must discover the secrets of his estate and bring a garden back to life in order to gain her own happiness and save the life of her cousin. "When A (inciting incident) happens, B (character) must do C (action) otherwise/before D (catastrophe)." (Screenwriters might call this a logline.) For an example, we can use Hannah Sheppard’s pitch test: Mary sets out to discover the secrets of Misselthwaite and bring the garden back to life.ĭespite the complexities of any novel, I think it’s useful when studying structure to see if a novel’s plot can be distilled into one line. She also hears rumors of a mysterious garden, locked up for over a decade after the death of her uncle’s wife. The manor is full of secrets, though, and Mary often hears the screams of a child echoing its halls at night, despite the servants’ insistence that it is only the wind. At Misselthwaite, she is mostly ignored and left to wander outside in the gardens. Mary is disagreeable, used to being waited on, and initially does not even know how to dress herself. After the death of her parents, she is sent to live at her mysterious uncle’s Yorkshire estate, Misselthwaite Manor. The Secret Garden tells the story of Mary Lennox, a spoiled young English girl being raised in India. Classic children’s novels are my favorite books to study and pick apart when I’m looking at structure, as they are concise enough to read in a single afternoon, and yet as complex as any adult novel. Long considered a classic, it’s still sometimes dismissed by scholars as “just a children’s book.” But children’s books can provide a master class in how to tell a complex story effectively in a short space. The Secret Garden is arguably Frances Hodgson Burnett’s most famous work. ![]() ![]() ![]() The Free Ranger is based upon the Full Ranger-EQ from SPL’s EQ Rangers series. It also has a sprawling melody with a great just-outside-of-soul sound. I favour track 3, “With Scars To Show”, because I’m a sucker for good groove and bass solos. They smoothly flow through style conventions and dynamics in a very entertaining way, and also complement each other and the record well. The compositions are harmonically and rhythmically rich, written in a vocabulary that is unmistakably jazz yet also has a distinct signature. The tunes feature inspired, complex-yet-accessible melodies, highlighted in track 6, “Not A Half Stepper,” as well as the previously mentioned “Another Word For Science”. It’s remarkable that all of these solos are not only well-executed, but expressive and in good service of the songs.Īll that improvisation is brought together by Johnston’s cohesive composition work. ![]() Solos and improvised sections are also well produced, having the band recombine into different duos and trios for effect, and also giving each musician a full single-instrument solo at some point in the record. The performers are confident and adventurous in their playing, and you can tell they have great fun interacting with one another. Improvisation is naturally a great part of False Ghosts, Minor Fears, and the record features a surprising amount of bold choices that land gracefully. It sounds like almost every rim, edge, and inch of cymbal gets tastefully played at some point. There are plenty of sax honks, bass ghost notes, and spanked piano chords to enjoy, but the nuanced sound of the recording is best represented by Fraser’s articulate drumming. The quality of the sound is capitalized on by the band, as they all explore the acoustics of their instruments during the more experimental improvised sections. I find, for example, that the level of bass on (good) headphones represents sharing a room with a kick drum, toms, and stand-up very well. Production sound is minimalist and detailed, aiming for an accurate live character. I find that “Another Word for Science” represents the album and band well, making for a great introduction. This back and forth repeats a couple times, giving each instrument a spot to shine. The piano, with little backing at first, takes a turn for the experimental early on, makes some interesting conversation, and tastefully merges back into the main theme. The swing is quickly resolved with some unison parts, and by second 45 - when the first piano solo begins - it feels like an introductory mini-tune has been played. This is highlighted in the first minute of the opening track “Another Word For Science”, which starts full-band with a walking swing and balanced tension. The quartet features Karen Ng on saxophone, Marilyn Lerner on piano, and Nick Fraser on drums. Johnston - better known for his work with the Juno awarded Johnny Favourite Swing Orchestra - acts as composer, band director, and bassist for the record.
